Shawna Calhoun, Canadian Certified Counsellor and EMDRIA Certified Therapist in Kamloops, BC

Meet Shawna

As a allied white settler of Scottish and English descent, I am grateful to live, work, and learn on the beautiful Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory.

I believe that healing happens through connection—to ourselves, to others, and to the parts of us that may have been carrying pain, fear, shame, or survival strategies for a very long time. My role is not to "fix" you, but to walk alongside you as we make sense of your experiences, reconnect with your strengths, and create space for meaningful change.

Many of the people I work with are balancing multiple roles and responsibilities. From the outside, they may appear capable and successful, yet internally feel overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or exhausted. Others are carrying the effects of trauma, anxiety, grief, chronic stress, self-doubt, or painful life experiences that continue to impact how they feel about themselves and move through the world.

Whether you are beginning therapy for the first time or returning to do deeper work, I strive to create a space that is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in safety. Together, we work at a pace that respects both your goals and your nervous system.

Shawna Calhoun, MC, CCC, EMDRIA Certified Therapist™

Founder of Rooted Horizons Clinical Counselling

My work is rooted in the understanding that healing involves more than thoughts alone. Experiences live not only in our minds but also within our bodies, relationships, emotions, and nervous systems. For this reason, I take an integrative and holistic approach that considers the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of wellbeing.

I am an EMDRIA Certified Therapist™ and EMDR is the primary framework I use in my practice. EMDR can help individuals process distressing experiences, reduce the impact of trauma, and move toward greater confidence, resilience, and freedom in their lives.

Alongside EMDR, I draw from:

  • Polyvagal Theory and nervous system-informed approaches

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Mindfulness-based practices

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Somatic and body-based approaches

  • Play and expressive arts interventions when appropriate

My approach is always tailored to the individual sitting across from me. There is no single path to healing, and together we will find what works best for you.

My Approach

Areas of Practice

  • Trauma-related conditions, experiences and symptoms

  • Anxiety | chronic stress

  • Grief & loss

  • Life transitions

  • Chronic pain

  • Burnout | Work Trauma

I believe therapy works best when it feels collaborative, respectful, and grounded in safety. My role is not to tell you what to do or to position myself as the expert on your life. Instead, I strive to create a space where we can explore your experiences together with curiosity, compassion, and honesty.

I value authenticity, connection, humour when appropriate, and a pace that respects both your goals and your nervous system. Whether we are processing difficult experiences through the phases of EMDR or exploring current challenges, our work together will be guided by what feels most meaningful and supportive for you.

What It’s Like to Work Together

Beyond the Therapy Room

When I'm not working with clients, you'll often find me spending time with family and friends, exploring the outdoors, travelling, volunteering in the community, or continuing to learn through professional development. I believe growth is a lifelong process, and I remain continually inspired by the resilience, courage, and wisdom of the people I have the privilege of working alongside.

Training & Credentials

I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with a Master's Degree in Counselling and over twenty years of experience supporting children, youth, adults, and families in a variety of helping roles.

I am an EMDRIA Certified Therapist™, a member of EMDR Canada and EMDRIA, and continue to pursue advanced training in trauma treatment, nervous system regulation, and integrative approaches to healing.

In addition to clinical work, I am also passionate about supporting the growth of fellow clinicians and am currently completing my training as an EMDR Consultant-in-Training and working toward my Canadian Certified Counsellor–Supervisor (CCC-S) designation.

Seeking support can feel vulnerable, but you do not have to navigate life's challenges alone. Whether you are looking for ongoing counselling, EMDR therapy, or an intensive healing experience, I would be honoured to walk alongside you.
